Inside the Art World This exciting lecture series at Swarm features insightful talks by arts professionals--the people who work behind the scenes in the art world. Speakers for this series include gallery owners, directors of museums and non-profit spaces, curators, art critics, and art consultants-the people who write reviews, plan museum and gallery exhibitions, and help artists build their reputations locally and nationally. Lectures for the 2006-2007 series have featured
Professional Practices for Working Artists In this twelve-session professional practices course for artists, we'll introduce you to the effective marketing and management tools used by successful exhibiting artists to show and sell their work. You'll learn how to write an artist's statement about your work, how to put together an artist's packet to submit to galleries for review, and where to research the best venues for exhibiting your art. You'll also learn business and record-keeping practices, as well as advertising strategies to get the most exposure for your work. Class activities include a field trip to the downtown San Francisco galleries and portfolio presentation exercises. |
Artist's Websites: Your Digital Portfolio Are you thinking about building a website to help market your artwork, but don't know where to start? What are the options for getting a website built? How do you get a domain name? What design guidelines should you follow? How do you bring traffic to your website? In this three-hour workshop you'll learn how to develop a website and use it as a marketing tool to maximize exposure for your work. Setting Goals for your Art Career Getting your art out into the gallery world can seem like an insurmountable challenge-but breaking this overwhelming task into small, finite steps can make the job manageable, and bring success within reach! In this workshop you'll learn methods for defining the steps you need to take to achieve your short-term and longer-term goals, and for managing any setbacks you might encounter. You'll leave this three-hour workshop with clearly defined career goals and a plan of action for promoting your artwork. Writing Your Artist's Statement Artist's statements are one of the main tools artists use to describe the concepts that inspire their work-but a well-written artist's statement can be the key to successful marketing and press coverage, too. Using peer feedback and writing exercises, we'll work together on developing a statement for your current work. The goal of this three-hour workshop will be a working draft of an artist's statement. Next Steps Are you stuck? Have you been trying to move your art career moving forward, but are just not sure what to do next?
